Hermetic symbolism in relation to Alchemy and Freemasonry

Oswald Wirth (1860 – 1943) was the driving force behind the revival of symbolic and traditional studies in French Freemasonry. Esotericist, occultist, tarologist, astrologer and writer, he links alchemy and Freemasonry using symbolism as a binding agent.

This short book, written by a quality Freemason, deserves to be republished with generous notes for the attentive. It deals with alchemical, health and medicinal subjects, and gives advice to neophytes and companions of authentic masonry. The author emphasizes wisdom and Hermetic knowledge, important keys in the quest for truth. We recommend rereading it often to absorb its wisdom, adapted to our modern times. This book can guide readers on the path to human redemption and ontological truth. Don’t overlook the illustrations – they are essential to understanding. This book can become a daily guide to personal transformation and acceptance of your destiny.

Joseph Paul Oswald Wirth (1860-1943) was a Swiss occultist, artist, and author. He studied esotericism and symbolism under Stanislas de Guaita, creating a cartomantic Tarot called “Les 22 Arcanes du Tarot Kabbalistique” in 1889. This deck, based on the Tarot de Marseille, incorporated occult symbolism and was the first in a series of occult and initiatory decks. Wirth also had interests in Freemasonry and Astrology, writing books on Freemasonry and gaining high positions within Masonic lodges. His most famous work is “The Tarot of the Magicians” published in 1927.

“The explanation of the principles and symbols is in the first part of the book, which I think is the most interesting, fuller and better written, very clear, extremely fascinating. The remainder is more scattered and varied, I still found the interpretation of the painting and the explanation of the septenary interesting.

That said, the author is not an outside scholar but a leading Mason, so a detached approach is not to be expected.
At times it sounds as if we are hearing from a very old person steadfast in a way of thinking that in the light of today’s world (the book is from the early twentieth century) can only appear decrepit and completely outdated. As much as the author endeavors to convince us that Hermeticism is the perfect explanation of the principles of reality, it is a philosophy that evidently regards internal logic and the beauty of interpretations as more valid than objective reality.
This aspect, although in a collateral way and independent of the author’s intentions, gave me much food for thought and highlights a lot of biases that shape the way we reason.” – Amanita Eremita’s Reviews – goodreads
