Elementary treatise on occult science: Understanding the Theories and Symbols Used by the Ancients, the Alchemists, the Astrologers, the Freemasons & the Kabbalists

Gérard Anaclet Vincent Encausse (1865-1916), known as Papus, was a French physician and occultist, co-founder of the Martinist Order with Augustin Chaboseau.

Far from being elementary, this 7th edition is very complete and delivered with clarity and precision. Papus explains to the reader the essential basics of Occult knowledge in simple, accessible language.

Gérard Encausse, also known as Papus, was a French physician, hypnotist, and popularizer of occultism. He was born on July 13, 1865, in A Coruña, Spain, to a Spanish mother and a French father. Encausse moved to Paris at a young age and received his education there. He dedicated much of his time to studying various occult subjects, such as the Kabbalah, tarot, and alchemy. He was a member of the French Theosophical Society but left due to his disagreement with their focus on Eastern occultism. In 1888, Encausse co-founded the Kabbalistic Order of the Rose-Croix and established the Librarie du Merveilleux and its monthly revue L’Initiation. He was also associated with other esoteric organizations and authored several occult books. Despite his involvement in occultism, Encausse pursued conventional academic studies and became a successful physician. He even served as a physician and occult advisor to Tsar Nicholas II and Tsarina Alexandra of Russia. Encausse warned the royal couple about the influence of Rasputin in their government decisions. He passed away in 1916.

“Clearly explained and full of connections never explained in my years of studying occult philosophy and literature, this book is a joy to read! Full of ideas to meditate on, I predict this book will be re-read often. I hope the success of this book will lead to Llewellyn Publications green-lighting the publication of the English translation of Papus’ other book, Methodical Treatise on Occult Science.” – Daniel’s Reviews – Amazon.com

“This book reads a bit like 19th century continental philosophy. Actually, since it was written in the 1890’s, it is quite literally 19th century continental philosophy. Just a more obscure flavor of it than I studied in college. The English translation of Papus’ work (originally in French) can be difficult to get through for the modern reader, but it is a surprisingly comprehensive overview of occult concepts for being only 300ish pages. I would recommend it for a more seasoned researcher and fan of the occult, but beginners may struggle through it.” – BJ’s Reviews – Goodreads
